Writer Submission Guidelines

Deadlines: July 31, 2009 / September 30, 2009 / December 30, 2009


SUBMISSION CATEGORIES:

  1. Poetry

  2. Non-Fiction short stories

  3. How 2s: Sharing "how-to" do something, like "How to Make and Keep Friends"

  4. It Happened to Me: Sharing personal stories of courage, triumph, hope and strength

  5. In My Opinion -- sharing your opinion on topics that effect girls

  6. Features -- These are articles on topics assigned by the NM Girls Institute.  They will cover topics such as body image, health issues, crisis intervention, friendship, family and parent issues and other issues that affect girls everywhere.

  7. Watching the Web: Researching interesting, funny, helpful, strange web sites and reporting on them


SUBMISSION INFORMATION:

  1. 1.Writers must include their name, year of birth, home address/city/zip, phone number and email address (if available).  You must be 15-18 years old to be published.  Most published pieces should be approximately 500 words.  The length of short stories should be discussed with the NM Girls Institute prior to submission.

  2. 2.Any work you submit may be published in the newsletter.  We won't return work, so keep a copy.

  3. 3.Label all work fiction or nonfiction.  Be sure to include a title.

  4. 4.Our deadlines are posted above.  if we receive a submission after the deadline, we may choose to publish it in another edition but cannot guarantee publication.

  5. 5.Include the following statement as a cover page to all your work: "This will certify that the following work is completely original," followed by your full name to affirm the work is yours.

  6. 6.Request anonymity.  If due to the very personal nature of a piece, you don't want your name published, we will respect your request, but you still must include the name and address information on the original submission.

  7. 7.Writing may be edited, and we reserve the right to publish our edited version without your prior approval.  We may not print your name on sensitve peronsal articiles and in rare cases, we may change names to protect individiual's identity.

  8. 8.All work submitted becomes the property of the NM Commission on the Status of Women's NM Girls Institute program.  We retain the non-exclusive rights to publish all such works in any format.  All material in the newsletter is copyrighted to protect us and to exclude others from republishing your work.  However, all individual contributors retain the right to submit their work for publication elsewhere.


SUBMITTING ART AND PHOTOGRAPHS:


  1. We can't return artwork or photographs, but we can use a good photocopy or scan of your work.  You do not have to send in the original.

  2. To send artwork or photographs by email attachment, scan items as a grayscale, line art or color file or at least 300 dpi and smaller than 10mb with saved.  Do not scan as a halftone.  Save all items as a TIFF or a JPG before sending it as an attachment.

  3. Do not send a version of someone else's work, or a drawing of a copyrighted character, like Spiderman or Sailor Moon.

  4. Email any questions about the best way to send art submissions.


SUBMITTING YOUR WORK BY MAIL:

  1. Do not place more than one poem or story on an 8.5" x 11" page.  Please do not fold artwork or staple photographs.

  2. Type all submissions, if possible.  Otherwise PRINT NEATLY in ink.


OTHER INFORMATION:

  1. If you are published in the newsletter, you will receive a letter or email from us as notification.

  2. The newsletter will also be availble online.

  3. The newsltter is distributed to high school and interested youth organizations throughout the state.
